Getting to Moeraki
Tucked along the southeast coast of New Zealand’s South Island, Hampden is a small seaside village in the Otago region, conveniently located between Oamaru and Dunedin.
By Road:
Once you're in the South Island, getting to Hampden is easy and scenic. Located just off State Highway 1 between Oamaru and Dunedin, Hampden is best accessed via the Pacific Coast Highway, which offers beautiful coastal views and relaxing driving conditions.
30 min. South of Oamaru, 1 hour North from Dunedin by the beach in Hampden.
If you enter Hampden from Oamaru, drive passed the gas station and shops and turn left opposite HAMPDEN STORES, yellow building, into DERBY STREET. Follow the signs. THIS WAY YOU WILL AVOID LEFT TURN INTO LINCOLN STREET BY THE GAS STATION.
If you enter Hampden from Palmerston turn right at the yellow coloured HAMPDEN STORES, into DERBY STREET. Follow signs to the camp and turn RIGHT into main entrance of Moeraki Boulders Holiday Park @ Hampden Beach.
WHEN LEAVING, TURN LEFT, FOLLOW SIGNS, AVOID DRIVING UP STEEP, NARROW HILL & DANGEROUS RAILWAY CROSSING.
Whether you're coming from Christchurch, Queenstown, Invercargill, or elsewhere in Otago or Canterbury, the route to Hampden includes plenty of opportunities to stop at small towns, beaches, and scenic lookouts along the way.
